Mera Bharat Mahan.!

1) According to The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) the number of undernourished people is the

highest in India heading over 212 million people.

2) According to the Planning Commission of India 27.5% of Indian population is living below poverty line in 2004-2005

3) Half the world's reported cases of polio, a crippling disease virtually wiped out in Western countries, occur in India

4) Diarrhea kills 500,000 Indian children every year.

5) India has a serious water, air & sound pollution rise.

Looking at the surveys, statistics & research on problems in India one thinks India has great problems.

A famous Vastu Shastra expert said that as India is surrounded by 3 sides from water that is why there are many

problems in INDIA! Then what is so great about India? Why great saints in the past have glorified, birth in India?

It is the culture, found in India that makes it great. Culture is defined as a favorable environment for a process to achieve certain goal.

Culture has 3 things 1) goal 2) process 3) favorable environment.

The vedic culture which prevails in India for thousands of years provide the favorable environment & explains the process to achieve the goal.

In India we find so many temples where gods are worshipped eg: Jaganath Puri temple in Puri, Lord Venkatesh temple in Tirupati.

Every Indian village has a temple.

There are holy place where the pastimes of Lord took placed like Vrindavan, Ayodha, Mayapur, Kurukshetra.

There are the inexhaustible literature describing moral ethics, philosophy & pastimes of lord like Srimad Bhagavatam, Srimad Bhagavad Gita,

Ramayan, Mahabharat.

India is land where many saints have lived like Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Vallabhacarya, Tukaram maharaj, Ramanujacarya, Madhavacarya, Sant Kabir, Sant Gurunanak.

In every home of India the families do prayer, diety worship, chanting lords holy name, reading Holy Scriptures, rituals described in the Vedas.Traditions & teachings are been carried by father to son & grandson.

Indian cultures constitute the above all things .The temples, holy places, scriptures, saints’ act as favorable environment. While the traditions coming

In families like diety worship, rituals, chanting holy names, reading scriptures are an inherent process that all Indians are following.

But what is the goal of such a nice culture?? The Indians youth ask why to follow the old traditions & the ancient scriptures. ?

That seems to be unknown to a lot of Indians & has caused Indians neglecting & giving up this rich culture.

The goal of such a culture is explained in the Srimad Bhagavad Gita (15.15)

Chapter 15

text 15

sarvasya caham hrdi sannivisto

mattah smrtir jnanam apohanam ca

vedais ca sarvair aham eva vedyo

vedanta-krd veda-vid eva caham

Translation

I am seated in everyone's heart, and from Me come remembrance,

knowledge and forgetfulness. By all the Vedas I am to be known; indeed

I am the compiler of Vedanta, and I am the knower of the Vedas.

Here Lord Krishna is saying that the whole vedic culture & knowledge has a goal that is to know him.

Who is Krishna? .Krishna is the Supreme personality of Godhead isvarah paramah krsnah Bramha samhita 5.1.

The living entity keeps changing body & gets new set of senses for fulfilling his desires for enjoyment in the material world.

But the nature of this material world & material senses is limited so he gets frustrated in his attempts. In the human form of life he gets an opportunity

To know about Krishna through the vedic culture. In all Vedic literature, beginning from the four Vedas, Vedanta-sutra

and the Upanisads and Puranas, the glories of the Supreme Lord are celebrated. By performing Vedic rituals, discussing the Vedic

philosophy and worshiping the Lord in devotional service, Supreme Lord Krishna is attained. Therefore the purpose of the Vedas is to understand Krishna.

The Vedas give the right direction to the people so that they can properly mold their lives and come back to Godhead, back to home.

By worshiping Krishna one gets out of the cycle of birth & death as confirmed in Gita (4.9)

TEXT 9

janma karma ca me divyam

evam yo vetti tattvatah

tyaktva deham punar janma

naiti mam eti so 'rjuna

TRANSLATION

One who knows the transcendental nature of My appearance and activities

does not, upon leaving the body, take his birth again in this material

world, but attains My eternal abode, O Arjuna.

Such is the aim of vedic culture to achieve the highest goal in life ie the Spiritual World.

The vedic culture not only provides spiritual goal but also teaches to live in harmony with material nature & humanity.

After knowing that this whole world belongs to Krishna (god) one doesnot enjoy greedily the material nature but only consumes

The quota he requires. It brings about divine qualities in man & he then loves each & every living entity in this world seeing them as his brother ie son of the same god.

Thus the vedic culture give a wholly solution. Proper understanding & preservation of this culture is needed to save this world from great danger like global warming, exploitation of resources.

A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupad the founder acarya of International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Iskcon) brought this vedic culture to the west

He presented this culture in a non-sectarian way & now millions of western people are benefited by the vedic knowledge & culture.

It is this Vedic culture which makes India Great & it is the duty of every Indian to preserve & spread this culture for the benefit of the whole humanity.

A) Knowledge of Soul

This is the basic understanding in spirituality.

We donot identify ourselves with Body.(gitas first lesson!!)

Are we this body?? --- No

--- We are owner of the body like driver in the car .

--- Intuitive understanding --- My body my eye – I am different than this body. He passed away. Something within body passed away.

--- past life memories – scientific proof

--- Near death experience –scientific proof

Gita 2.13

dehino 'smin yathā dehe

kaumāraḿ yauvanaḿ jarā

tathā dehāntara-prāptir

dhīras tatra na muhyati

TRANSLATION

As the embodied soul continuously passes, in this body, from boyhood to youth to old age, the soul similarly passes into another body at death. A sober person is not bewildered by such a change.

Characterstics of Soul -

1) Eternal

Gita 2.20

na jāyate mriyate vā kadācin

nāyaḿ bhūtvā bhavitā vā na bhūyaḥ

ajo nityaḥ śāśvato 'yaḿ purāṇo

na hanyate hanyamāne śarīre

TRANSLATION

For the soul there is neither birth nor death at any time. He has not come into being, does not come into being, and will not come into being. He is unborn, eternal, ever-existing and primeval. He is not slain when the body is slain.

2) Reincarnation

Gita 2.27

jātasya hi dhruvo mṛtyur

dhruvaḿ janma mṛtasya ca

tasmād aparihārye 'rthe

na tvaḿ śocitum arhasi

TRANSLATION

One who has taken his birth is sure to die, and after death one is sure to take birth again. Therefore, in the unavoidable discharge of your duty, you should not lament.

Gita 15.7

mamaivāḿśo jīva-loke

jīva-bhūtaḥ sanātanaḥ

manaḥ-ṣaṣṭhānīndriyāṇi

prakṛti-sthāni karṣati

TRANSLATION

The living entities in this conditioned world are My eternal fragmental parts. Due to conditioned life, they are struggling very hard with the six senses, which include the mind.

Gita 4.2

evaḿ paramparā-prāptam

TRANSLATION

This supreme science was thus received through the chain of disciplic succession, and the saintly kings understood it in that way. But in course of time the succession was broken, and therefore the science as it is appears to be lost.

Service to Guru – key to success in Spiritual life

Gita 4.34

tad viddhi praṇipātena

paripraśnena sevayā

upadekṣyanti te jñānaḿ

jñāninas tattva-darśinaḥ

TRANSLATION

Just try to learn the truth by approaching a spiritual master. Inquire from him submissively and render service unto him. The self-realized souls can impart knowledge unto you because they have seen the truth.

--No blind following or absurd inquiries

C) Krishna is Supreme

Krishna the Speaker of Gita is the Supreme Personality of Godhead

He is the Supreme Lord & he declares this in the gita & Arjuna accepts it & confirms that great sages like Asita , Devala, Vyasadeva agree to this.

SO We accept Krishna to be the Supreme Lord.

--- Krishna as the Controller of the material world

Gita 9.10

mayādhyakṣeṇa prakṛtiḥ

sūyate sa-carācaram

hetunānena kaunteya

jagad viparivartate

TRANSLATION

This material nature, which is one of My energies, is working under My direction, O son of Kuntī, producing all moving and nonmoving beings. Under its rule this manifestation is created and annihilated again and again.

--- Krishna as the maintainer of the material world

Gita 15.17

uttamaḥ puruṣas tv anyaḥ

paramātmety udāhṛtaḥ

yo loka-trayam āviśya

bibharty avyaya īśvaraḥ

TRANSLATION

Besides these two, there is the greatest living personality, the Supreme Soul, the imperishable Lord Himself, who has entered the three worlds and is maintaining them.

--- Krishna as the destructor of the material world

Gita 9.7

sarva-bhūtāni kaunteya

prakṛtiḿ yānti māmikām

kalpa-kṣaye punas tāni

kalpādau visṛjāmy aham

TRANSLATION

O son of Kuntī, at the end of the millennium all material manifestations enter into My nature, and at the beginning of another millennium, by My potency, I create them again.

What about demigod worship??

Krishna says that it is done to him indirectly & in a wrong way (as below)

Gita 9.23

ye 'py anya-devatā-bhaktā

yajante śraddhayānvitāḥ

te 'pi mām eva kaunteya

yajanty avidhi-pūrvakam

TRANSLATION

Those who are devotees of other gods and who worship them with faith actually worship only Me, O son of Kuntī, but they do so in a wrong way.

--- Krishna the only Enjoyer of all sacrifices.

Gita 9.24

ahaḿ hi sarva-yajñānāḿ

bhoktā ca prabhur eva ca

na tu mām abhijānanti

tattvenātaś cyavanti te

TRANSLATION

I am the only enjoyer and master of all sacrifices. Therefore, those who do not recognize My true transcendental nature fall down.

--- Krishna the Source of material & spiritual world.

Gita 10.8

ahaḿ sarvasya prabhavo

mattaḥ sarvaḿ pravartate

iti matvā bhajante māḿ

budhā bhāva-samanvitāḥ

TRANSLATION

I am the source of all spiritual and material worlds. Everything emanates from Me. The wise who perfectly know this engage in My devotional service and worship Me with all their hearts.

--Krishna the Seed giving Father.

Gita 14.4

sarva-yoniṣu kaunteya

mūrtayaḥ sambhavanti yāḥ

tāsāḿ brahma mahad yonir

ahaḿ bīja-pradaḥ pitā

TRANSLATION

It should be understood that all species of life, O son of Kuntī, are made possible by birth in this material nature, and that I am the seed-giving father.

---Krishna is Supreme --- confirmed by Arjuna & sages.

Gita 10.12-13

arjuna uvāca

paraḿ brahma paraḿ dhāma

pavitraḿ paramaḿ bhavān

puruṣaḿ śāśvataḿ divyam

ādi-devam ajaḿ vibhum

āhus tvām ṛṣayaḥ sarve

devarṣir nāradas tathā

asito devalo vyāsaḥ

svayaḿ caiva bravīṣi me

TRANSLATION

Arjuna said: You are the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the ultimate abode, the purest, the Absolute Truth. You are the eternal, transcendental, original person, the unborn, the greatest. All the great sages such as Nārada, Asita, Devala and Vyāsa confirm this truth about You, and now You Yourself are declaring it to me.

D) Chanting Krishnas Holy Name

We Chant Krishnas Holy name & we follow the path of great souls

Gita 9.14

satataḿ kīrtayanto māḿ

yatantaś ca dṛḍha-vratāḥ

namasyantaś ca māḿ bhaktyā

nitya-yuktā upāsate

TRANSLATION

Always chanting My glories, endeavoring with great determination, bowing down before Me, these great souls perpetually worship Me with devotion.

The process is a happy process. (chanting dancing & feasting)

Gita 9.2

rāja-vidyā rāja-guhyaḿ

pavitram idam uttamam

pratyakṣāvagamaḿ dharmyaḿ

su-sukhaḿ kartum avyayam

TRANSLATION

This knowledge is the king of education, the most secret of all secrets. It is the purest knowledge, and because it gives direct perception of the self by realization, it is the perfection of religion. It is everlasting, and it is joyfully performed.

E) Offering food & work to Krishna

We offer food to Lord with love & we offer our results of work to Lord with our donations & charity to his temple worship & preaching mission.

Gita 9.26

patraḿ puṣpaḿ phalaḿ toyaḿ

yo me bhaktyā prayacchati

tad ahaḿ bhakty-upahṛtam

aśnāmi prayatātmanaḥ

TRANSLATION

If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, fruit or water, I will accept it.

- As he is not asking meat egg or fish we donot offer these to him.

Gita 9.27

yat karoṣi yad aśnāsi

yaj juhoṣi dadāsi yat

yat tapasyasi kaunteya

tat kuruṣva mad-arpaṇam

TRANSLATION

Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer or give away, and whatever austerities you perform — do that, O son of Kuntī, as an offering to Me.

Abstract from purport

Everyone has to eat something to live; therefore he should accept the remnants of foodstuffs offered to Kṛṣṇa. Any civilized man has to perform some religious ritualistic ceremonies; therefore Kṛṣṇa recommends, "Do it for Me," and this is called arcana. Everyone has a tendency to give something in charity; Kṛṣṇa says, "Give it to Me," and this means that all surplus money accumulated should be utilized in furthering the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement.

F) Giving up material Enjoyment & endeavoring for mind & sense-control

We give up material enjoying desires & activities to become fixed in devotional service. We strive for mind & sense control to achieve this.

Gita 6.17

yuktāhāra-vihārasya

yukta-ceṣṭasya karmasu

yukta-svapnāvabodhasya

yogo bhavati duḥkha-hā

TRANSLATION

He who is regulated in his habits of eating, sleeping, recreation and work can mitigate all material pains by practicing the yoga system.

Gita 2.44

bhogaiśvarya-prasaktānāḿ

tayāpahṛta-cetasām

vyavasāyātmikā buddhiḥ

samādhau na vidhīyate

TRANSLATION

In the minds of those who are too attached to sense enjoyment and material opulence, and who are bewildered by such things, the resolute determination for devotional service to the Supreme Lord does not take place.

G) Discussing About Krishna & his pastimes & paying obeisances to him

& worshiping him & Surrendering to him

We hear, discuss & glorify about his pastimes to remember him at the time of death & return back home back to Godhead(Spiritual World).We find great satisfaction in this.

Gita 4.9

janma karma ca me divyam

TRANSLATION

Gita 10.9

mac-cittā mad-gata-prāṇā

bodhayantaḥ parasparam

The thoughts of My pure devotees dwell in Me, their lives are fully devoted to My service, and they derive great satisfaction and bliss from always enlightening one another and conversing about Me.

Gita 18.70

adhyeṣyate ca ya imaḿ

dharmyaḿ saḿvādam āvayoḥ

jñāna-yajñena tenāham

iṣṭaḥ syām iti me matiḥ

Translation

And I declare that he who studies this sacred conversation of ours worships Me by his intelligence.

Gita 18.65

man-manā bhava mad-bhakto

mad-yājī māḿ namaskuru

mām evaiṣyasi satyaḿ te

pratijāne priyo 'si me

TRANSLATION

Always think of Me, become My devotee, worship Me and offer your homage unto Me. Thus you will come to Me without fail. I promise you this because you are My very dear friend.

Gita 18.66

sarva-dharmān parityajya

mām ekaḿ śaraṇaḿ vraja

ahaḿ tvāḿ sarva-pāpebhyo

mokṣayiṣyāmi mā śucaḥ

TRANSLATION

Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me. I shall deliver you from all sinful reactions. Do not fear.

7. Methods of Obtaining Knowledge

Methods of Obtaining Knowledge

There are three basic methods of obtaining knowledge, two of which are
faulty, and one which is faultless when properly applied. The two
faulty methods are: 1. Direct perception, and 2. Induction (making
general conclusions from limited experience). The faultless method is
the descending process by which one hears from the proper authority
who is faultless (Krishna or His pure devotees).

The two faulty methods are known as the "ascending process."
"Ascending" means to go up. So one who follows these processes is
trying to understand God or Truth with his limited faulty faculties.
We see the adherents of these methods changing their theories
constantly. They are not sure of anything.

In Krishna consciousness we hear Krishna's opinion which is perfect,
because He is omniscient; that is, there is nothing unknown to Him.
His words are always perfect and true. There is no need of a new
opinion every 5 minutes. Krishna's devotees who are in the disciplic
succession simply repeat His words and therefore what they speak is
also perfect.

Srila Prabhupada gave the example of a small boy who asks his father
what is the name of the object into which his father is speaking. His
father replies, "microphone." The boy repeats. Even though the boy may
not have complete under?
standing, because he is repeating what is true, his words are true.

Revelation, not speculation, is the only way one can understand God.
Krishna wants us to know Him, so He reveals Himself through the
scriptures and His pure devotees.
